Bieler’s Broth: A Gentle Reset Without the Detox Drama

After the holidays, detoxes and cleanses are everywhere. Juice fasts, extreme restrictions, “start fresh on January 1” promises—you know the drill. Personally, I’ve never been a fan. I notice that many people push things even harder over Christmas and New Year’s, almost as if they’re banking on a cleanse to undo it all later.
Here’s my honest take: you don’t need to starve yourself or live on juice for a week to feel better. In fact, simply removing sugar and refined flour for a few weeks can dramatically improve how you feel.
That said, there is one very simple, healing, and deeply nourishing soup I return to again and again - especially after travel, stress, or a period of less-than-ideal eating. It’s called Bieler’s Broth.
What Is Bieler’s Broth?
Bieler’s Broth is not a trendy new recipe. It’s been around for decades and was developed by Dr. Henry Bieler as a therapeutic, vegetable-based broth. This is not a “dinner party” soup—it’s more medicinal than culinary but it’s perfectly pleasant and incredibly easy to digest.
Dr. Bieler believed this specific combination of vegetables helped restore acid–alkaline balance and sodium–potassium balance in the body, with particular support for the adrenal glands—those stress-sensitive, sodium-loving organs that so many of us unknowingly run into the ground. The broth is also supportive of liver function, our primary detoxification organ.
In short: this soup is especially helpful for anyone under stress. And let’s be honest - who isn’t?
How I Use It
When life feels chaotic—too much travel, a packed schedule, missed meals, or heavy food—I’ll make a large batch of Bieler’s Broth every few days. I’ll drink a mugful as a snack, or have it alongside breakfast or dinner.
I personally don’t recommend cutting out protein and healthy fats, so I don’t use this as a meal replacement. Instead, I think of it as a daily therapeutic addition. When I drink it consistently for about two weeks, I always notice a significant improvement in my overall sense of wellbeing.
A Note on Ingredients
These vegetables aren’t exactly seasonal in winter, which I normally try to respect. But in this case, I see it as a short-term, intentional choice. Because this is meant to be a healing soup, organic vegetables are essential- pesticides would only add to the body’s toxic burden.
Bieler’s Broth Recipe
Ingredients
• 4 medium courgettes sliced into rounds (discard ends)
• 500g/3 cups chopped green beans, ends removed
• 2 stalks celery, chopped
• 1–2 bunches parsley (flat-leaf or curly), tough stems removed
(Tip: freeze stems for future stock)
• 4 cups filtered water
Instructions
1. Place all ingredients in a large pot and bring to a boil.
2. Skim off any foam that rises to the surface.
3. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer until vegetables are tender—about 15 minutes.
4. Purée using a handheld blender, or transfer to a blender and purée in batches.
5. Serve warm.
Notes
I usually make this twice in one week, which gives me enough to enjoy a bowl or mug each day. It keeps well in the fridge and reheats easily. You may wish to add ginger to enhance the flavour.
